Tuesday January 7th snow laid on the ground around the outside of Central York High School. But, inside the school, the atmosphere was anything but cold. While sophomore Elizabeth Ketterman provided musical accompaniment, eight students participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition. They were expected to memorize and perform two distinct poems. Judges Tara Goodrich, Dianna Guise, Lucinda Hogentogler and Shanna White focused on physical presence, voice and articulation, appropriateness of dramatization, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding and overall performance.
Sophomore Alexis Glaudin took first place with her performance, while sophomore Deborah Dadeboe was named first runner up. Seniors Morgan Rutter and Andrea Quartey tied for second runner up. Other participants include Sophomores Imanni Jones and Olivia Long, along with junior Allison Rambler and senior Christian Warner. For the past three years, Central has sent a regional winner to the state competition.
The next step for Glaudin is the regional competition, where she will compete against students from Adams, Franklin and York Counties. At the regional level, participants must memorize and perform three poems. The regional winner will then move on the the state competition, held in Harrisburg, then the national competition in Washington D.C.
