Academic prep to undergo major changes

Ryan Caufman, Central York High School’s principal, recently announced that academic prep—better known as “ACP”—will be changing very soon. As we know it now, ACP is decided by the days 1 through 6, but that’s no longer going to be the case. Instead, ACP will run on a Monday to Friday schedule, one based around what can be referred to as “flex time.”

“The whole idea of this is to customize this portion of time for what they need on that day,” Caufman said. Students will be required to sign up for and attend an ACP unless circumstances warrant otherwise, but their options will be more varied. They can choose from some clubs, “office hours” held with teachers, seminars, remediation and more. But signing up is vital. “I need to be sure I know where everybody’s at,” Caufman said.

And the process of signing up is fairly convenient. All offered clubs, office hours and seminars will be posted on an extension to the www.cypanthers.org page. To sign up, all you’ve got to do is check a box and hit “Register.” This will make more sense once everything’s set in motion, of course.

Though Caufman said students are required to sign up for ACPs as early as possible, it’s always possible to switch, so long as students are in the location the

y signed up to be in. “Here’s the beauty of it,” he said. “We want everybody to register ahead of time, but say it’s Tuesday, and you’ve got a test tomorrow, you can still go in and register that day. You can register whenever.”

He said that this change is only the beginning. “The idea is, in the future, that the ACP time frame would actually become longer,” Caufman said. “We would take some time off each class and add it to ACP. Here’s why: We’re working with staff to change the way instruction is done. So instead of standing there and lecturing you, they’d provide you with the resources you need. The idea of you guys researching and creating—that’s how you grow at a greater pace.”

Oh, and don’t worry, seniors, because your senior release will still apply as usual. Still, keep a lookout, because you might find something you want to stay for.

Stay tuned for more information on the new ACP format. Caufman said teachers will first be taught the basics of the site, then the students.

Caufman said, “This is all a beta version, a rough draft.” It’s been in planning since his return in October, and he hopes to have it enacted sometime soon.
