On the morning of January 7, 2015 two masked figures shot down 12 men, who worked for the popular French newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The attack has been labeled as one of the most deadly terrorist attacks since 1961 in France. Many think the attack may have been planned after some Islamic “jokes” were made and published. However, the crowds of people all across France and all over the world are marching for the idea that Freedom of Speech is a right all humans should share.
The magazine is known for its satirical content and president Hollande called this an act of “extreme barbarity”. I think the big question here is not whether we should all be free to speak what we want, because that’s a definite yes. The question is, what would ever make this okay? Who just wakes up in the morning and says, “Today I am going to kill an innocent man?” The answer to that in my own perspective is, two men who knew they were committing a crime on what is foreign land to them, but were still stupid enough to go through with it. So as the French say, “Je suis Charlie” (“I am Charlie”).
