Central serves up some new additions

It’s just October and already there are plenty of changes to the high school. From CLC being moved after first period, to iPad minis and those mysterious glass rooms in the Hub. Many students may still be adjusting to the differences. Perhaps one of the most notable changes to the school can be found in Central’s cafeteria.

A taco/nacho bar, a baked potato bar and many other new food items peek from behind the crowded cluster of hungry students. Fish and chips, deli sandwiches, American goulash, chicken and cheese quesadillas and of course and even a new pizza bar. All are just a handful of the new food options Central students now have to choose from. So why are there so many changes?

Up until last year, Ted Sartalis worked as the head cook at OSS Hospital. This year however, he took on the position of head cook at the high school.

“Coming from a hospital to a school-service lunch is a little different,” said Sartalis. “I’m serving more kid-friendly stuff compared to when I worked in a hospital.”

Sartalis says he wants to ensure that students have a lot of options, while also making sure that students come back every day with the same food choices they enjoy.

“My goal is to never have a line shut down here,” said Sartalis. “I want to have everything open every day for you guys to enjoy.”

So far Sartalis said he has really enjoyed working with his staff and seeing the kids eat the food they worked hard to prepare. Students seem to be enjoying the changes as well.

“I like the lunches [this year],” said Senior Theresa Vova. “There are more fresh veggies, and the meat seems to be spruced up with onions. I also think the taco bar is really good.” Vova described last year’s food as dry and said it often seemed like it was reheated.

Sophomore Lauren Oberdorf agreed and said the meals seem fresher this year.

Freshman Jordan Winkler said the high school food was an improvement from the middle school. “There is more quantity and more slushy flavors too,” said Winkler.

Overall it seems that some Central students are welcoming to the changes in the cafeteria.

“I’m here to please the kids and I am learning a lot,” said Sartalis, before heading back behind the counter to continue his work in making sure the students at Central get a quality meal.
