Tennis team crushes the competition
The girls’ tennis team started the 2015-2016 season with a successful victory at Delone Catholic High School on September 1. The Panthers won 6-1 against the Squires, with victories from seniors Yvonne Peters-Washington, Jenn Elder, Sophie Brink and Sarah Donner, and sophomore Madison Mummert.
Elder, who has been playing tennis for two and a half years, said. “My favorite part of being on the tennis team has to be having fun with my my friends.” The tennis team is a tight-knit community she said, adding the practices are every school day and the teammates spend a lot of time with each other.
Elders’ doubles partner is new to the district this year. Peters-Washington, a senior, came from State College Area High School, where she dominated the competition, winning the District 6-AAA singles title and making it to the quarterfinals in the PIAA State Singles Championship.
Also new to the team this year is freshman Carolyn Snell and sophomore Olivia Quartey. Snell is the only freshman to make the team. “I’ve played for five years before I was on the team,” said Snell. Her favorite part about being on the team? Away matches.
This is the fourth year that Quartey has played tennis, but her first on the team. She plays doubles with Olivia Bernoudy. “Everyone is really cool and fun. There’s a huge sense of community, and everyone accepted me even though I started playing my sophomore year,” said Quartey.
Junior Elisabeth Ketterman has been playing tennis for three years. “[I love] spending time with friends and enhancing my tennis skills,” said Ketterman.
“My favorite part about last season was seeing Brooke Hartzell ride the ‘Stallion’ around the courts,” said Ketterman. Hartzell graduated from Central in 2015, and the “Stallion” is the nickname that the players gave a bicycle they found in the equipment shed.
The team looks to be competitive this year, but they had lost a close match to rival Dallastown High School 4-3, but followed that game up with wins against Hempfield, Northeastern, Red Lion and Dover.
