Homecoming week highlights: What you might've missed

Homecoming at Central York High School is never just a game and a dance. School spirit builds throughout the week with spirit days, a parade, bonfire and pep rally. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

Spirit week kicks off the events to help boost the homecoming morale, Monday being “I Love the 90’s” day. The usual number of scrunchies in the school doubled and various band shirts-especially Nirvana-could be easily spotted in the crowd. Tuesday brought twin day where students partnered up to create matching outfits. Wednesday’s college day was dominated by Penn State’s blue and white theme. Thursday’s color wars pitted each class against one another as each class wore a different color. On the final day of spirit week, the student body came together for a classic school spirit day where each student found their own way to participate.

On October 4, student council hosted its third annual homecoming parade. Over 40 floats crowded the parking lots of the high school with the winner of the most creative float being crowned at the bonfire. The sophomore float won the award for more creative.

“The idea came from a brainstorm session with the student council members in our class. We were thinking of puns and everybody loved the beach theme,” said Grace Wills, sophomore class president. “We were all thrilled to have won an award. I was so proud to see all the hard work and time pay off.”

Next came the pep rally, where students gathered in the gym to get pumped up for the big game. The homecoming court got to shine as they were introduced to the student body. The “White Chicks” dance performed by Elijah Loring and Caroline Blalock won everybody’s hearts. The CYHS cheerleaders took turns leading the battle cry for every class, with the juniors winning in the end.

Friday night brought the big game against the Spring Grove Rockets, where we dominated with a final score of 58-14. Loring and Chloe Reeser were crowned king and queen at the game.

At the end of the week came the homecoming dance. Girls scrambled to finish their looks while guys fastened their ties. It was a final hoorah for the exhausting week. The gym was transformed with twinkling lights and a chandelier. Everyone danced their hearts out to the Cupid Shuffle and shouted along to Low by Flo Rida. Pictures with silly props were taken home as a keepsake to remember the night. All in all, I’d say homecoming week was a success.
