How to have a holly jolly snow day

Snow days can be amazing for a sleep-deprived high schooler. But once you wake up, it’s important to fill your day with fun winter activities. Here are a few ideas to keep your day interesting:

Bake cookies or make edible cookie dough: Baking is always a great way to boost anyone’s mood. It’s easy, fun and most of all, delicious. However, if you’re someone who isn’t a fan of spending a lot of time in the kitchen, making edible cookie dough is a super easy alternative. The process takes less than five minutes and it tastes amazing. Simply look up “edible cookie dough recipe” online, and millions of results will pop up. No matter what I have going on during a snow day, I always make sure I have time to make myself a special treat.

Play in the snow: Having fun in the snow isn’t just for little kids. There are plenty of fun activities to do outside during a snow day. Sledding is a classic for people of all ages. Even if you don’t have a traditional sled, anything similar in size or shape works: cushions from your outdoor furniture, a cookie sheet or even a boogie board are all good options. Other snow activities like building a snowman or having a snowball fight definitely depend on that day’s type of snow, but if you’re able to, these can be the best moments to share with some friends.

Watch holiday movies: Being a high school student leaves little time for sitting down and relaxing, but it’s very important to leave room in your busy schedule to do just that. Throw on a pair of your coziest wintry pajamas, grab a blanket and snuggle up on the couch with your favorite holiday movie; for me, it’s Will Ferrell's “Elf.” If you’re having trouble deciding, Netflix has plenty of great options to choose from.

Self-care: Taking care of yourself should always be a priority, but it can be hard to fit it in during an average school day. Start with a long, warm bath to unwind. While you’re in there, put on your favorite cleansing face mask and let it soak in before washing it off. Once you’re out of the tub, it’s important to replenish the skin with a moisturizer since the cold months can be hard on your body. Next is the time to do anything you find enjoyable while self-caring. I enjoy painting my nails, reading a book or watching my favorite TV show. This time is for you and can last as long as you’d like it to.

Purge your closet: A great time-consuming activity is cleaning out your closet. Throughout the year, your sense of style can change and it’s common to grow tired of old clothes. Start by going through one item of clothing at a time to stay organized; I start with shirts and go from there. Salvation Army, Goodwill or Lifepath Christian Ministries are all places in York that will gladly accept any clothing or shoe donations you bring them. The holiday season is the time to give back, so use this day off to do your part.
