Of the members of Central York High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club who competed in the PA State Leadership Conference, two of the 19 members were state finalists.
Junior Victoria Huynh placed fourth in the graphic design event and junior Lauren Weirauch placed third in the client service event. Now, they are eligible to compete for national awards at the 2019 National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX.
“FBLA showed me that there is variety in the business field— it’s much more than just finance and CEOs,” said Huynh. “I have been taking 2-D design classes in school, so I thought that participating in the competition would be a good way to use my skills in a competitive setting.”
Huynh said that she intends to pursue a career in marketing in the future. A portion of marketing involves communication through graphics and speech— both skills that she feels as though she has improved through her competitions.
Weirauch also believes that FBLA has helped prepare her for a potential career.
“My intended future career has to work with people. I felt that if I learned about client service now, it will prepare me in the future, which it has,” said Weirauch. “Due to my further understanding of the process you must go through to meet customer needs, how to respond and what to give them in return for their inconvenience, I know how to present myself in a respectable manner.”
Both Huynh and Weirauch attribute FBLA competitions for their improved public speaking abilities.
The purpose of FBLA is to prepare members, like Huynh and Weirauch, for careers in business and to assist them through the development of various abilities with real-life applications in the workplace.
“The whole experience boosted my confidence and was all in all very fun,” said Weirauch. “For my first year in FBLA, it was an exciting ride to make it through regionals, states and into nationals.”
Both Weirauch and Huynh look forward to the chance to compete for national awards this summer.
“I’m excited to participate in the competition, travel to Texas and to meet other business-passionate students from all over the U.S. this summer,” said Huynh.
