Epilepsy Awareness Club

The Epilepsy Awareness Club was established at Central York High School in 2013 by graduate Faith Hatchard. Hatchard was passionate about the cause from her own personal experience and was very dedicated to changing the way people view epilepsy.

Mrs. Brandy Detwiler oversees the activities of the club and works with its president to coordinate club activities.

The club is known for hosting “Purple Outs” at sporting events like football games, soccer games and basketball games.  At the Purple Outs, they set up a booth selling T-shirts, wristbands and decorate the fields in purple.

The club has about 50 members from all different grades in the school and meets every other Thursday in room 528. Senior Catalina Feistritzer is the current president. The club is completely volunteer-based so everything they do for the club is without personal gain. Every year all of the money the club raises goes to Leg Up Farms and the Central/Western Chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation. In the spring, the club goes out to Leg Up Farms and cleans out horse stalls to support the organization.

The clubs' two main goals are to make people aware that epilepsy isn’t rare and to support people in the community who are affected by epilepsy. This club is a great organization for a very underrated cause that deserves the support that this club provides.
