Journey to Mars

Journey to Mars Club is an intellectual club held in room 620. The club started on Feb. 12 and meets every Monday and Wednesday during flex. It is advised by Mrs. Dianna Guise, who is a member of the York County Astronomical Society. The members of the club discuss space exploration and other interesting topics relating to space and astronomy. Journey to Mars began as a flextime seminar, but evolved into a club.

Last year, Jonathan Steck was a part of the seminar. Steck approached Mrs. Guise this January in hopes of her saying she would be holding the seminar again. To his dismay, she was not, but she did tell him he could branch off on his own to start a club similar to the seminar. Space exploration was something Steck has been interested in so he decided that was what he wanted to do. Along with Steck, there are three other club members: Jeanette Harijanto, Carter Smith and Noah Shaffer. During the meetings, the members  discuss theoretical circumstances like traveling from Earth to different planets.

Journey to Mars has also talked about Alcubierre drive and exotic matter which is theoretical interstellar travel. The club desperately hopes to be able to do some sky exploring soon. They will be watching the launch of three astronauts that are going to the International Space Station on March 21. Journey to Mars hopes to expand their club and welcome more people who have the same love for space as they do. In a couple months, the Journey to Mars Club will build rockets in conjunction with York College’s Rocketry Club. As the year goes on, our Journey to Mars Club at Central will get to learn more and more about space during their meetings.
